The Castle Hotel, pub & restaurant , in Bishops Castle has been recently extensively refurbished, by new owners Henry & Bex, who both have a good local pedigree, growing up and helping run their family hotel on the North Shropshire borders. Passionate hoteliers they offer warm hospitality, helped by a good scattering of Laura Ashley furnishings, alongside original artifacts, and local bric-a-brac.
Warm roaring fires in the winter, and stunning secluded rear gardens in the Summer with views of Shropshire & Wales. Cosy bar, snug, restaurant, and games room offers something for everyone. Popular overnight and weekend break for Bishops Castle events and local attractions. Watch out for the welcome lick by 'guard dog' Millie....See the photo to the right of this page!
In the early 18th century The Castle began to deteriorate and in 1719 – the fifth year of the reign of George 1st The Castle Hotel was constructed over the site of the old Baille of the ancient Castle by orders of the 1st Duke of Chandos, James Brydges, a local landowner and a man of vast wealth that was gained in an age of unabashed corruption.
The 1st Duke of Candos sold The Castle Hotel to John Walcot who in turn sold it to Robert Clive (1725 – 1774), known more famously as “Clive of India”, who amassed such wealth during his escapades to India that it was said “you will be frightened by the dearness of everything.”
There have been people living and working on the site of the hotel for over a 1000 years and we hope we continue to add to that history every day.
