A fully-operational cafe in a church may seem somewhat bizarre; the fact that this is a predominantly vegetarian cafe with a licence may seem odder still but the eaterie here is a little gem.

Bill Sewell. who runs the vegetarian restaurant The Place Below in London. is the man behind the menu although the cafe is completely owned by the church. which also receives all the profits.

Hearty comfort is the guiding principle. Soups are thick enough to stand your spoon in. there'll be quiches. loaded no doubt with rustic cheeses. or maybe a Moroccan casserole with almond and currant bulghur.
Local produce plays a starring role whenever possible.
