Barely more than a slip road's length from the M40 is this fine country house hotel. all elegant grounds. squashy sofas by roaring fires and big curtains.

Its restaurant is formal with an ambience of almost unconcerned luxury.

Behind the ease. however. is a lot of graft. with the hard-working kitchen offering homemade breads and petit fours as well as the choice available in two set menus.

It is pricy. however. and whether the food is quite up to the expense is doubtful.

The hotel has been under new ownership since December 2004.
