Now with ex-Bank wizard Idris Caldora (pictured) in charge of all its foodie operations. the Belfry is offering superb fare in its French Restaurant.

 The rollcall of superb dishes includes seared scallops with fennel barigoule. peppered lamb loin with pommes mousseline. braised pork shoulder with sage and fried fillet of beef with foie gras and truffle.

 Luxury stuff indeed but with the expertise here. the confidence and ambition easily pays off.

 Expect to pay about £50 a head and the usual painful mark-up for wine (Rioja about £22).
